Description

The New York Sour is an evolution of the classic Whiskey Sour that became popular in the late 19th century. The special feature of this drink is the "float" of dry, fruity red wine that is carefully poured over the surface of the finished sour. This layer not only gives the cocktail a beautiful two-toned appearance but also an additional dimension of fruit and tannins that harmonizes wonderfully with the sweet and sour whiskey base.

Preparation

  1. Add whiskey, lemon juice, simple syrup, and optionally the egg white to a cocktail shaker.
  2. If using egg white, first perform a "Dry Shake" without ice.
  3. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously ("Wet Shake").
  4. Fill a tumbler glass with fresh, large ice cubes.
  5. Strain the contents of the shaker into the glass.
  6. Gently pour the red wine over the back of a spoon onto the surface of the drink to create a layer.
  7. Garnish with a lemon or orange peel.
