Description
The Americano is a timeless classic and one of the cornerstones of Italian aperitivo culture. It was first served in the 1860s at Gaspare Campari's bar in Milan. Originally known as the "Milano-Torino," it was later renamed "Americano" in honor of American tourists who loved the drink. It is the direct predecessor of the famous Negroni; if you replace the soda water with gin, you get its stronger cousin. The Americano itself is lighter, more effervescent, and the perfect drink to stimulate the appetite before a meal.
Preparation
- Fill a tumbler glass (or a highball glass) with ice cubes.
- Pour the Campari and sweet vermouth directly into the glass.
- Top up with a splash of soda water.
- Stir gently to combine the ingredients.
- Garnish with an orange peel or slice.
