Description

The Monkey Gland is a classic cocktail with a fascinating name, created in the 1920s at Harry's New York Bar in Paris. The name refers to a controversial medical theory of the time. The drink itself, however, is anything but controversial: it is a delicious and balanced mixture of gin and orange juice, rounded out by the sweetness of grenadine. The key feature is the hint of absinthe, which is added to the glass before preparation and gives the cocktail a subtle, complex anise aroma.

Preparation

  1. Pre-chill a coupe glass.
  2. Add a few dashes of absinthe to the chilled glass and swirl to coat the inside. Discard the excess.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients (gin, orange juice, grenadine) to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  4. Shake vigorously until the shaker is ice-cold.
  5. Strain the contents of the shaker into the prepared glass.
  6. Garnish with an orange peel.
