Description

The Margarita is arguably the most famous tequila cocktail in the world. Its perfect balance of sweet, sour, and salty makes it irresistible. The origin of the drink is shrouded in myth, but most stories place its creation in the 1930s or 1940s in Mexico or along the US border. A classic Margarita is not a frozen slushy but an elegant, shaken cocktail served "straight up" (without ice) in a chilled glass with its characteristic salt rim. It is the ultimate proof of how great tequila can taste in a mixed drink.

Preparation

  1. Prepare the glass: Rub the rim of a chilled Margarita glass with a lime slice. Then, dip the rim upside down onto a plate of coarse salt to create an even salt rim.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker two-thirds full with ice cubes.
  3. Add the tequila, triple sec, and freshly squeezed lime juice to the shaker.
  4. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until the shaker is ice-cold to the touch.
  5. Double-strain the contents of the shaker (through the main strainer and a fine tea strainer) into the prepared Margarita glass.
  6. Garnish with a lime slice or peel and enjoy immediately.
