Description
The Hot Toddy is the ultimate warming drink for cold winter evenings and a traditional home remedy for colds. Its history is old, likely dating back to 18th-century Scotland. The drink is a simple but incredibly soothing mixture of a spirit (usually whiskey), hot water, a sweetener like honey, and lemon. Spices such as cinnamon or cloves are often added to give it extra warmth and complexity. A Hot Toddy is like a liquid hug in a mug.
Preparation
- Preheat a heatproof mug or glass with hot water, then discard the water.
- Add the honey to the mug.
- Add the whiskey and lemon juice.
- Top up with hot (not boiling) water.
- Stir well until the honey has completely dissolved.
- Garnish with a lemon slice, a cinnamon stick, and optionally a star anise.
