Description
The Gaelic Coffee is the Scottish answer to the world-famous Irish Coffee. The key difference lies in the base spirit: instead of Irish whiskey, Scottish Scotch is used. This often gives the drink a subtly smokier and more complex note, depending on the Scotch used. The combination of warming whisky, strong coffee, the sweetness of brown sugar, and a cool, velvety cream topping makes it the perfect drink for cold evenings or as a digestif after a good meal.
Preparation
- Preheat a heatproof glass (ideally an Irish Coffee glass) with hot water, then discard the water.
- Add the brown sugar to the glass and pour in the hot coffee. Stir well until the sugar is completely dissolved.
- Add the Scotch whisky and stir again briefly.
- Lightly whip the cream until it is thick but still pourable.
- Gently pour the cream over the back of a spoon onto the surface of the coffee to create a distinct layer.
- Do not stir again and drink directly through the cool layer of cream.
