Description
The Black Velvet is a cocktail with a fascinating history. It was created in London in 1861 to mourn the death of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's consort. The idea was that even the Champagne should be in mourning, which is why it was "veiled" with dark, black stout. The drink consists of just two ingredients in equal parts and is often served layered, which is possible due to the different densities of the liquids. The result is a unique taste experience where the tart, roasted notes of the stout meet the dry, sparkling elegance of the Champagne.
Preparation
- Fill a tall, chilled glass (e.g., a champagne flute or pilsner glass) halfway with the chilled Champagne or sparkling wine.
- Pour the chilled stout very slowly over the back of a spoon onto the sparkling wine to create a layer.
- Serve without garnish and unstirred.
