Description
The Mint Julep is an iconic American cocktail, inextricably linked with the Southern United States and the Kentucky Derby horse race. It is a simple drink that thrives on the quality of its ingredients and the right technique. The combination of strong bourbon, fresh mint, and sugar, served over a mountain of crushed ice in an ice-cold silver cup, is unbeatable on a hot day. The drink unfolds its full aroma when you have the mint on your nose while sipping the cold, sweet whiskey.
Preparation
- Place the mint leaves and simple syrup in a pre-chilled Julep cup (or tumbler).
- Gently muddle with a muddler, just enough to release the essential oils without tearing the leaves.
- Fill the cup loosely with crushed ice.
- Pour the bourbon over the ice.
- Stir with a bar spoon until the cup becomes heavily frosted on the outside.
- Top up the cup with more crushed ice to form a small "snow cone."
- Garnish with a large, fresh mint sprig placed right next to the straw.
