Description
The Irish Coffee is arguably the most famous coffee cocktail in the world. It was invented in the 1940s in Ireland to warm up passengers at a cold airport. The drink is a simple but brilliant combination of four elements: warming Irish whiskey, strong hot coffee, the sweetness of brown sugar, and a floating cap of cool, lightly whipped cream. It is traditionally drunk hot through the cold layer of cream, creating a unique sensory experience.
Preparation
- Preheat a heatproof glass (ideally an Irish Coffee glass) with hot water, then discard the water.
- Add the brown sugar to the hot glass and pour in the hot coffee. Stir well until the sugar is completely dissolved.
- Add the Irish whiskey and stir again briefly.
- Lightly whip the cream until it is thick but still pourable.
- Gently pour the cream over the back of a spoon onto the surface of the coffee to create a distinct layer.
- Do not stir again.
